sara kaltwasser’s work explores how American identity is shaped through history, symbolism, and education. Working across painting, collage, and fiber, she examines the ways nationalism, mythologized history, and constructions of power are introduced and reinforced through visual culture and systems of learning. By combining flags with lined notebook paper, she creates tension between inherited national narratives and the spaces where those narratives are first taught.
Her work is rooted in the fractures within these systems, what is preserved, what is omitted, and how collective memory is constructed. Ultimately, kaltwasser asks viewers to reconsider the stories they inherit and the role education plays in shaping how history is understood and remembered.
