 Join SBM Gallery for openings, art walks, and artists in conversation. Each month in addition to general events a group of two or more artists will discuss the way they collaborate, how these partnerships impact their creative practice, and the joys and challenges of working together.

The nature of collaboration is not always linear and sometimes intersections happen that plant seeds for future engagement. Roberto Lugo and Sarah McCann will discuss how a chance meeting, Baltimore residency and enduring artistic connection has set the stage for longer term creative collaborations. They will discuss what life might look like for artists who have deeply personal independent practices as they launch a collaborative creative endeavor.

The Highlandtown First Friday Art Walk is a free, self-guided walking tour of arts venues, exhibitions, performances, pop-up shops and more! SBM Gallery will be participating beginning at 7:30 pm this month with a free artist reception. Join us for snacks and a chance to meet some of the exhibiting artists!

Artists in Conversation: Creative Collaborations Heather Douglas & Tiffany Jones

Beyond the Mask of COVID is a portrait storytelling project inspired by an intimate conversation between nurse and social worker Heather Douglas and her mother. Making her first foray into using art as a means of expression, Heather collaborated with artist Tiffany Jones to bring to life the stories and voices beyond the mask. Together they discuss how art became a means of communication and community building.

Artists in Conversation: Creative Collaborations Allison Duggan & Denise Gantt

In honor of Junteenth, Gantt and Duggan reflect on collaboration, personal power, platform-building, and the responsibility artists carry within systems that shape public life. Their conversation will explore the long history of Black people making art, both as a means of survival and institution building, and how film, visual art, and theater can activate philanthropy, accountability, and community power.
